It is spring, even though there is a blasting southerly in Dunedin and snow on the ground in Central Otago ❄️
Lots of our customers use Zestt Breathe+ products for hay fever and seasonal asthma management. Different types of pollen are more likely to cause hay fever or seasonal asthma issues.
It is likely you have cleared your car windscreen of Pinus radiata pollen lately, there is a lot of it around forming yellow waves of colour in unsuspecting puddles.
Pine pollen is large in size, when compared with grass pollen, it’s like comparing a basketball with a golf ball. It also has a strong, waxy coating. Its size and coating mean it is not usually the culprit causing outbreaks of hay fever or seasonal asthma.
The culprit is usually grass pollen.
The good news is that even though grass pollen is smaller than pine pollen, pine pollen flies much further, sometimes thousands of kilometres, because pine pollen contains air bladders (sacci) that help it float in the air.
Overall, if you suffer from allergies, staying a few hundred metres away from flowering grass meadows is a good idea.
Mmmm, not so easy in New Zealand I know …
So, if you are looking for a Nature-First Therapy for hay fever and seasonal allergies, it’s worth trying out our Zestt Breathe+ products. We like to call them Nature’s Antihistamines!
In more notes of interest in my foray into pollen and allergies:
- There have been numerous studies showing that children who grow up on farms have lower rates of asthma than children who grow up in cities;
- This suggests a resistance to some allergens may be formed in early childhood;
- In a Nature Plants paper, it was shown that exposure to greater vegetation diversity (a greater variety of plants and trees) is important in reduced asthma levels.
The moral of the story is to get into our native bush, even in a southerly!
You will get the added benefits of "Forestry Bathing" a Japanese activity to enhance your health, where you breathe in the abundant terpenes released by the trees, ahhhh.
